A Boot Collector Feature
An Ohio native who became, by one account, the only woman running a solo custom bootmaking shop in Texas — known for flamboyant, three-dimensional tops.
Stephanie Ferguson, originally from Ohio, studied bootmaking at Jack Reed's shop in Burnet, Texas, where she developed a flair for flamboyant colors and overlay work before opening her own shop in Millsap. A Texas Monthly feature on the state's top custom bootmakers noted she was, at the time, the only woman in Texas running a custom boot shop entirely on her own, specializing in tops with three-dimensional hummingbirds, coconuts, flamingos, parrots, and morning glories. Pairs at the time started around $850 with a six-to-eight month turnaround.
Vivid, sculptural overlay work unlike the more restrained styles common elsewhere in Texas bootmaking, with clients that have included country singer David Allan Coe.
Sculptural, three-dimensional overlay work out of Millsap.
Pairs from smaller, custom, or long-closed makers rarely come up for sale, so this search may not find anything. It’s worth checking back now and then.
