The Story

Texas Custom Boots operated out of South Lamar in Austin, run on the business side by Noel Escobar with master bootmaker Alberto "Gordo" Lozano, 37 at the time, building the boots. A Texas Monthly feature on the state's bootmakers singled the shop out for replicating conservative styles while still turning out eye-popping tops — and for a client list well beyond the usual working-cowboy trade.

What They're Known For

A client roster that reads like a greatest-hits list: Clint Eastwood, Kevin Costner, Willie Nelson, prominent Texas defense attorney Richard "Racehorse" Haynes, and University of Texas football coach Mack Brown have all worn the shop's boots. At the time of the Texas Monthly feature, pairs started around $1,000 with a 12-to-14-month turnaround.

An Austin shop that dressed movie stars and a Texas football coach alike.
