Anteater

A distinctive diamond-matrix texture — and, more often than not these days, a very convincing imitation of one.

Worth knowingGenuine anteater skin is hard to come by — only a small number of legal skins are made available each year, and real anteater boots routinely start around $1,000 and climb into the thousands for custom work. A lot of what's sold as "anteater" in stores is actually "anteater print" — ordinary cowhide embossed to mimic the texture, at a fraction of the price. That's a legitimate, legal product and not a problem on its own, but it's worth knowing which one a listing actually means before paying an exotic-skin price for an embossed cowhide boot.

What It Is

Genuine anteater leather comes from the giant anteater, native to South America, and is best known for its signature diamond-matrix raised texture — a distinctive, almost geometric pattern unlike any other skin on this list. Because legal supply is so limited, true anteater has stayed a rare, high-end specialty item rather than a common boot material.

In Boots

Full exotic uppers from a handful of boutique and high-end makers, where the diamond texture is the whole point. The far more common "anteater print" boots use embossed cowhide instead, offering the same visual pattern at standard cowhide pricing and durability.

Care

Genuine anteater calls for standard exotic leather care — see our boot care guide. Anteater-print cowhide needs nothing more than ordinary cowhide care.
