Leather Library
The default boot leather, and the one every other material on this list gets compared against.
Cowhide is the most abundant and affordable raw material in the boot business, and it comes in two very different finishes. Full-grain cowhide keeps the hide's natural surface intact — its own pores, markings, and fiber structure. Corrected-grain cowhide has that surface sanded away and an artificial pattern embossed back on, which hides flaws and keeps every pair looking identical, at the cost of some durability and feel. See our Grain & Grade guide for the full breakdown of why that distinction matters so much.
The large majority of cowboy boots use cowhide somewhere — as the main upper on everyday and work boots, and often as the lining or sole lining even on boots finished in a fancier exotic skin on the outside.
Standard leather care applies directly — see our boot care guide for cleaning, conditioning, and storage.
