What It Is

Kangaroo hide has an unusually tight, uniform fiber structure, which lets it hold far more of its strength than cowhide when split down thin. A widely cited figure — traced to Australian government research — puts it at roughly ten times cowhide's tensile strength at equal thickness; independent hands-on tests have found more modest margins, closer to double. Either way, kangaroo consistently outperforms cowhide for strength per ounce, which is exactly why it can be used so much thinner.

In Boots

Lightweight exotic and dress boot uppers, where a thin, supple leather still needs to hold up to real wear. The same properties made it a long-time favorite for athletic cleats and motorcycle leathers, though it's thinner than those boot uppers typically run elsewhere on this list.

Care

Takes conditioner well, but go easy — thin leather absorbs product fast, and it's easy to over-saturate. See our boot care guide.
