A Boot Collector Feature
A Lucchese plant manager left at 33 to start his own shop in 3,000 square feet, went straight to a Louisiana alligator farm for his hides, and ended up popularizing a toe shape the rest of the industry eventually copied.
Gerardo "Jerry" Guerra founded Black Jack in 1996, at age 33, after working as a plant manager at Lucchese — the same boot capital his family had moved to when he was ten years old. He started the company in a modest 3,000-square-foot space, a small footprint for what would grow into one of El Paso's most recognized exotic-leather bootmakers.
Guerra built Black Jack into the industry's leading alligator-boot producer by partnering directly with White Gator, a Louisiana alligator farm, giving the company close control over sourcing rather than buying hides secondhand. Along the way, Black Jack is credited with popularizing the square-toe boot, a shape that went from one company's signature to an industry standard other makers adopted widely. Guerra has stayed hands-on, personally selecting exotic materials and overseeing production, guided by what he's described simply as a mentality of always trying to improve.
Alligator was the starting point, not the ceiling. Black Jack's material list has grown to include mad dog goat leather, caiman tail, and pirarucu fish leather, sourced globally rather than from a single region, all worked by master bootmakers the company says bring a combined 200-plus years of experience to the shop floor. Construction runs a roughly 100-step process, built on oak-tanned leather outsoles and lemonwood pegging. The brand also maintains a design partnership with retailer Pinto Ranch, producing exclusive styles with details like specialty cording patterns and V-cut toes found nowhere else.
A factory tour here walks through the full range of steps in the process, with finished custom orders often sitting ready to ship right alongside the works in progress. One standout on a recent visit was a pair styled after paper currency, detailed closely enough to read at a glance — the kind of pair that makes clear this is a shop turning out genuinely stellar custom work, not just production runs.
A tooled pair from the TW Collection, also featured in our tooled boot gallery.
Thirty years after leaving a plant manager's job to start his own shop, Jerry Guerra's alligator boots and square toe are now the industry standard he helped set.
