A note on this entryThis Houston shop is a separate company from Black Jack Boots, the El Paso bootmaker founded by Gerardo Guerra already profiled on this site — the shared "Black Jack" name is a coincidence between two unrelated makers.

The Story

Maida's BlackJack Boot Company began with first-generation Italian bootmaker Sal Maida Sr., who served Houston customers for years before his son, Sal Maida Jr., took over alongside bootmaker Richard Salazar in 1977 and carried the business forward. A Texas Monthly feature on the state's top custom bootmakers noted the shop's upscale boots, well suited to Houston's cowboy-ball social circuit, with pairs at the time starting around $695 and a ten-to-twelve week turnaround.

What They're Known For

Upscale, dressed-up Western boots built for Houston's formal cowboy-ball crowd, with clients that have included the rock band ZZ Top and actor Ben Johnson.

A separate Houston shop that just happens to share a name.

Pairs from smaller, custom, or long-closed makers rarely come up for sale, so this search may not find anything. It’s worth checking back now and then.
