We slightly disagree with one point: that a vintage pair has to fit perfectly the first time you try it on. The right size can depend on a few things:

• How much the boots have already stretched. A worn pair has already given a little, and leather keeps shaping to your foot.
• Your socks. A thick boot sock and a thin dress sock fit very differently in the same pair.
• How long you wear them. A pair worn all day may call for a little more room, and many people add insoles for comfort or support.
